Good to Know: Deck the Halls

Christmas is nearly upon us, and in the busy-ness of this time of year, decorating can quickly fall to the back of the to-do list. Today for Good to Know, I wanted to share a few of my favorite decorating tips to help make the holiday decorating process as easy and painless as possible.

Begin with a color scheme

Maybe you like sticking with a classic color scheme, or maybe you want to switch it up each year. Either way, you can freshen up decor you’ve had for a long time and incorporate new colors by adding natural elements and ribbon. This year, I was inspired by a dehydrated orange tutorial from House of Jade, but instead of a DIY I found my oranges online. As you’ll see throughout this post, they were super versatile and easy to include throughout my home. Plus, I love decorating with ribbon because it’s easy to tie on light fixtures and other decor, which makes a space feel more decorated than it actually is. Maximum reward for minimal effort!

Reuse and Replace as Necessary

I loved this advice from Design Mom on reusing holiday items. As you unpack your storage boxes each year, assess what may need to be repaired or replaced before buying something new. As long as everything is stored properly, there’s no reason that you can’t reuse garland and other decorating supplies year over year. This is one reason we often recommend buying the neutral option for items that you’re going to have for a long time. If your trimmings are already fairly neutral, it’s that much easier to pick and incorporate a new and exciting color scheme each year. This year, I mostly reused favorite pieces that I have collected over time, but I did add a few new treasures, including the candle circle pictured above.

If you’re on the hunt for new pieces to fill out your holiday decor, you can find some of our favorites here.

Little Touches Make All the difference

It certainly doesn’t need to be extravagant, but adding small and simple flourishes throughout your home help the space feel more decorated. This is where the ribbon really comes in handy!

Don’t Stop at the entryway

Although your big holiday party might be cancelled this year, extending the decor past the living room and the entryway creates a feeling of warmth and holiday cheer throughout your home. Definitely something that the kids will remember and cherish as they grow up. This is a great place for pre-made garlands, and in this case, another example of how versatile the dehydrated oranges are!

Get the kids Involved

While your kids are making holiday crafts, you can use them as decor! This can be as simple as paper snowflakes, but the effect is very nice and the kids will feel proud that their creations are on display. A little Christmas cheer goes a long way, so use every resource that you have!

If you have more holiday decorating tips, leave them in the comments below! In the meantime, here are a few more of my favorite pictures. Happy decorating!
