Dutch Fields Part Two: The Barn

Last week, we shared part one of our Dutch Fields project, so today we wanted to share part two! One of our favorite projects last year was a client’s dream home and barn in scenic Midway, Utah. If you missed the home blog post last week, you can read it here.

Next door to the main house sits a large barn, which will act as a multi-use space. It’s a place to have fun, entertain, swim, make music, and get some work done. Our client has a large family and an even larger extended family, so they wanted a space that could be used for a variety of activities. The main living area of the barn can be used as a music room, it has lights and sound equipment for performances, and is spacious enough for entertaining.

In the main entertaining space, the two-story fireplace draws the eye upward, towards the large circular chandelier. Vertically paneled nickel board covers the walls. This also draws the eye upward and helps the space feel large and airy. The doors along the outside walls and into the pool area will allow for indoor-outdoor living and entertaining once the weather warms up. The size and versatility of the space along with the fact that the furniture can be easily rearranged makes this room one of the most flexible we’ve ever designed.

One of our favorite details in the space is the kitchenette. The kitchenette was originally going to go along one of the side walls, with a storage closet under the stairs. However, we decided to change the plan and tucked the kitchenette underneath the staircase instead. This change gives our client more flexibility for using the space for events and changing the configuration of the room, and we love the look of the kitchenette under the stairs.

Along with the music and entertainment space, the barn is home to a large pool area, which is perfect for summer swim parties for friends and family. To fully accommodate a large crowd, there are his and hers bathrooms, equipped with showers and storage lockers.

In addition to a space for entertaining, the barn will also act as an office for our client. A bright and spacious loft and separate bathroom offer an ideal spot for getting some work done.
