Good to Know: Small Entry Solutions

A few weeks ago we asked for design questions on our Instagram account and we noticed there were a lot regarding the entryway, specifically smaller entryways. Having a small entry is not an uncommon problem, most of us don’t have an entry that can house large pieces of furniture. For today’s Good to Know, we’re going to share a few ways you can define the small space and still make it feel grand.

One of the first things we would recommend considering is your wall treatments. Maybe it’s time for a new coat of paint that can set this space apart from the rest of the home. Adding millwork and paneling are both great ways to add character and dimension without taking up any square footage. The same goes for wallpaper - cocooning your entryway in wallpaper could make this small space feel intentional and can often trick the eye to make it feel more expansive.

The next thing to consider when designing your small entry is artwork and/or mirrors. Mirrors are great because they have the advantage of making a room feel larger, and in the case of any small space, this is the goal. In many of our entry designs, we make a mirror or art piece the focal point of the room - both of these options are, again, another way to add interest to your space.

Something else to consider is your lighting: whether it’s a ceiling fixture, sconces or if there is an opportunity for lamps. Choosing your light fixtures is something not to be overlooked. It is a design element that can really change the feeling of a space and the style of your home. Even in a small entryway, you can add an interesting flush mount or semi-flush mount ceiling fixture or sconces flanking some artwork to help elevate the overall look and feel.

Another way to make a small entry feel complete is by adding small accessories. Things like baskets to store shoes or a vintage umbrella stand would add some texture while also adding some functionality.

Lastly, if you do have the space for small furniture pieces, a slim console, a small chest, a bench or even just a simple chair can really pull together a small entry to make it feel purposeful.
