Good to Know: How to Make a Bed

There is nothing that helps start the day quite like making your bed. Everyone has their preferred method so today, we’re going to share our favorite ways to make a bed for both form and function. Plus, we’ll share a few tried and true bedding options that we love.

A great set of sheets is the first and arguably the most important layer to making your bed. We have a few different brands that we love but linen is definitely our preferred fabric for fitted and top sheets. Linen offers a beautiful relaxed look while being breathable and durable. We love Parachute for all bedding, especially their linen sheets. They offer a great palette of color options and their quality is top of the line. The Citizenry also has beautiful, comfortable and timeless options for bedding as well. Their linen sheets are heaven-sent. We recently found and are enamored with the Casaluna Target bedding line. We own it, we’ve bought it for our clients and there are rave reviews all around. Their linen sheets are our favorite, but the sateen sheets have also been a hit among our clients. A few of our designers own their linen sheets and duvet set and love it. Great bedding at a knockout price.

Once your sheets are on you can do a few different things. We love the look of a nice coverlet or quilt as the next layer. This is especially helpful in the colder months. If you don’t want to layer your quilt under your comforter, you can always have it folded at the foot of the bed. This is another trick we love since it adds a nice weight and can provide color and texture. A favorite piece for layering on beds is a Kantha quilt. Etsy is always one of our best sources for all things unique. The variety of colors and patterns ensure yours will truly be one of a kind.

Your next layer is likely your comforter. The most common option is a duvet with a cover, however, if you’ve followed us for a while, you’ll know Marianne prefers to use a thick quilted comforter instead since putting a duvet cover on an insert can be a bit of a workout. We love the linen quilts and duvet covers from Parachute or the Cloud Cotton Quilt. These are great options for kid’s beds as well. You can pull your comforter all the way up to the pillows, fold it down with the top sheet or fold it down almost halfway to show more of the sheets, quilt or coverlet if that’s your preferred look.

Now it’s time for pillows. A few weeks ago we shared this post on Instagram with an unconventional opinion that sparked a lot of conversation. Nobody needs a million throw pillows on their bed. This isn’t to say we don’t love a good throw pillow, just in moderation. Our most loved lumbar pillow is the Montauk 18x60 Body Pillow. It is made of relaxed linen fabric and comes in a lovely array of colors, with a down insert. This is what Marianne (as well as several of our designers) has on her bed and what we’ve sourced for a few of our clients. If you are wanting more pillows, you can line up several of the same pillow for a more clean and structured look, or blend a mix of textures, patterns and color to create an eclectic feel. Keep in mind, you may not want too many stripes, florals or plaids in one space. The same can be said of size and shape. If you are going for a more eclectic look, find pillows that vary in size and shape so you can create levels. Throw pillows are a great way to have some fun within any space and an item that can be swapped out as mood or season strike. You can shop some of our favorites below.

And finally, a great way to finish off the look is with a throw blanket placed across the foot of your bed. This layer is not only a pretty addition, but a functional one too. I love grabbing mine to cuddle up when it’s just a little cool in my room and I’m not quite ready to crawl all the way into bed.
