Good to Know: Decorating your Porch for Fall

There is no way around it, we love fall. As we’ve mentioned before, fall is our favorite season, and we are embracing the cooling temperatures and fall leaves! We’ve already talked about decorating your home's interior for the season, but we haven’t talked about the exterior. Decorating for the changing seasons and holidays can be a little tricky without feeling too theme-y and having to change it up constantly, and exteriors are no exception.

As we set out to make my front porch a little more festive for the season, we gathered mums and pumpkins from local grocery stores in my area. We then paired these natural elements with a variety of baskets and planters to hold the florals and add in texture, color, and height. These basics will get you through the fall months. When October hits, you can add a little Halloween fun and once November rolls in, take Halloween down and keep the rest until December.

Here are some things to keep in mind as you decorate your exterior:

  • Decorating your home does not need to be extravagant. We all probably have that one neighbor that goes all out. Their house is meticulously decorated and we can’t keep up. That’s fine! You can put together a simple and beautiful look without spending too much time or money on it. As you scroll down farther, we’ve included a bunch of inspiration images. Many of our favorite looks included simple nods to the season that can easily be created. No pressure here to be meticulous!

  • Pick a color scheme and stick to it. One of the easiest ways to create a cohesive exterior look is to pick a color scheme. This will help direct your shopping, and will end up looking curated and effortless.

  • Invest in a few things, and just switch out the natural elements each year. For the Halloween decor, don’t feel pressured to buy new decorations every year. These pieces are only outside for about a month out of the year, so they can last a long time. If you’re just starting to decorate your exterior, invest in a few baskets and decorations, and then take the care to store them properly so they’ll last for years to come. This will help save on costs, as each year you’ll just need to purchase the natural elements, like mums and pumpkins. For affordable pumpkins and gourds, as well as fragrant cinnamon brooms, we recommend Trader Joe’s!
