Good to Know: Easy Home Upgrades

A full remodel or new build isn’t always in the cards for everyone. However, there are many simple updates to add throughout your home to make it feel new. In this Good to Know post, we’ll share a few ideas for you to consider that will add interest and value to your existing home.

The power of paint

The most impactful change you can make for a reasonable price is a fresh coat of paint. The color of your walls can often determine the overall mood and feeling of your home. Make note of what colors you feel best around and are naturally drawn to. Generally, for interior walls, we love a warm neutral look but, we do love to add in some color to different rooms around the home when we can (think powder bathrooms, kid spaces, laundry room or home offices). You can find a list of our favorite greige colors here, our favorite blue paint colors here, and general painting tips to keep in mind before you start painting your home here

UPdate lighting

Most builder-grade homes come with lighting that is often small and rather generic. Like paint, the amount and type of light in our homes can affect our mood, creativity, health, safety, and productivity. Don’t be afraid of statement lighting pieces. Above the kitchen island, dining table or over a bathtub are great places to display beautiful light fixtures. Lamps, both table and floor, are particularly easy pieces to update because you don't need to move or add any wiring to your home. We love the special touch that lamps can add to any space and the mood this lighting can create.

Styling and accessorizing

A home never feels complete without the final layer of accessories. A full refresh can be achieved by swapping a whole room or house of accessories, but we also love a collected approach. Add things to you life that you love—pieces that are meaningful go a long way. These items might be sculptures, paintings, books, ceramic vessels, candle sticks, textiles, etc. Our favorites tend to be inherited pieces and things we have acquired while traveling.

Books are another accessory that will add interest to your surfaces. Moving around existing books in your space and purchasing new books that support new and ongoing interest is a thoughtful way to make old feel new (you can see a round up of our favorite coffee table books here).

Another great way to freshen up your space is by updating your textiles. New pillows, throws and bedding can do wonders in making your home feel new. Find patterns and prints that speak to you and your personal style. Fabrics are a great way to add color to your home. Many people like to transition these items by finding materials and color palettes that reflect the current season.

Like books, moving your art collection around the house can really make both your space and the art itself feel new. We recommend moving these pieces around from time to time, as well as adding to your collection. Etsy is a great source for original art as are antique stores and local art galleries and markets.
